The Digital Transformation Zone (formally the Digital Oilfield Zone), one of the most popular exhibition features, launched in 2014, is back bigger and better at Global Petroleum Show this year as the show continues to keep up with the latest developments across the oil and gas industry. Digital transformation is the number one IT trend that will fundamentally change the face the oil and gas industry.

This dedicated zone provides key insights into the world of digitalisation and how innovative disruptive technologies are transforming business models with the use of artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics, machine learning, real-time data analytics and cloud computing. New for 2019, the Digital Transformation Zone has tripled in size with over 9,000 square feet relocated in Halls D and E.

In today’s fast-paced environment digital transformation is rapidly changing the landscape in the energy sector. Energy companies have significantly amped up their investment in the digital technologies in the last few years resulting in improved decision making for exploration and production assets, including reservoirs and pipelines. Global investment in digital electricity infrastructure and software has grown by over 20% annually since 2014, reaching USD 47 billion in 2016. This digital investment in 2016 was almost 40% higher than investment in gas-fired power generation worldwide.

What’s going on in the digital transformation market place?

‘The global financial advisory firm’s poll of 100 senior oil and gas executives saw 42% of respondents cite efficiency as the main investment driver in the current price environment. Almost 90% of those surveyed said their investment in digital will increase over the next two years. Around three-fourths said their companies had already started implementing robotic process automation (RPA), and 87% indicated that they are using advanced analytics as they look to use data to increase productivity.’ Source: Oil and Gas Digital Investment is Surging but Progress Remains Slow

‘BP decided to see what would happen if the AI system was given free rein to essentially tweak the knobs and levers at Wamsutter. BP estimates the methane vented from the field is down 74% thanks to better monitoring and maintenance. Gas production rose 20% using the AI-powered system, and costs fell 22%. Jobs have started to change as a result. “Now field techs are getting trained in Linux and Python,” says Brian Pugh, head of BP’s Lower 48 operations.’ Source: How Algorithms are Taking Over Big Oil
