In Alberta, 12% of the province’s landscape is made up of challenging, environmentally sensitive soils like peat and muskeg—conditions that have long frustrated road contractors Hird (2020). Traditional roadbuilding requires removal of these materials and disrupts the natural carbon stores beneath which accelerates greenhouse gas emissions and requires frequent maintenance. These issues drive up long-term costs, cause delays and downtime, especially in peak construction seasons.
The Twin Lakes Campground in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, a popular recreational destination, needed additional parking lot facilities due to the deep layers of peat soil beneath.

Determined to find an innovative, long-term solution for their parking woes and to meet their visitor demand, the county reached out to Paradox Access Solutions for help. Paradox introduced their Tough Cell® geocells—a groundbreaking, soil stabilization technology that reinforced the ground to create a durable, year-round parking facility. Here’s a recap of this game-changing geocell project.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Facing a dire need to revamp the parking lot at Twin Lakes, the county was referred to Paradox Access for a versatile, innovative solution. With frost still in the ground and the May long weekend fast approaching, traditional remediation methods were off the table. However, Paradox’s Tough Cell® technology offered the ideal alternative. Requiring minimal excavation and installation despite the season, NPA geocells fit the job! The county partnered with Paradox to execute the project, on time and on budget by leveraging its resources.
The Mission and Challenge
Paradox constructed a stable, reinforced parking lot over the deep peat with minimal disturbance, and over a short three-day span. Working collaboratively, the job was executed with the county’s manpower and machinery, and with Paradox’s product, expertise and supervision to ensure accurate installation.
The Outcome
Twin Lakes campground met their parking lot commitments to their anticipated visitors for the May long weekend and beyond. The remediation provided key wins for the client which included significant savings and an environmentally sustainable solution which was of high importance for the county.
