Buffalo inspection were asked to develop an encoded phased array procedure to meet the requirements of the 2018 CSA W59 code in order to inspect some extremely large 78” OD x 37mm WT structural elements.
This was the first time that an encoded phased array procedure has been developed, accepted and implemented against the 2018 code, as CSA W59 was updated to include this option instead of only the standard FA (Fixed Attenuation) method. If we were only able to apply the FA method it would have taken up to 10 hrs to complete the ultrasonic inspection of each weld; with the encoded PAUT approach we are able to complete the entire weld in 45mins and retain the data for later processing if required.
This has enabled an accelerated production schedule for the project and a high level of quality to go hand in hand.
