Premier Danielle Smith issued the following statement on the listing of the proposed oil pipeline to the west coast, now called Pacific Link, as a project of national interest:
“Today marks a significant victory for Alberta’s and Canada’s energy future. The listing of Pacific Link as a project of national interest under the Building Canada Act is an important step toward strengthening our economy, enhancing energy security and connecting Canadian energy to growing global markets.
“The benefits to Albertans and Canadians are clear: during construction, Pacific Link will create up to 140,000 jobs at its peak, mostly in Alberta and British Columbia. Operations, ongoing production, maintenance and trade could support an additional 50,000 jobs per year for Albertans and Canadians. The hundreds of billions of dollars that Alberta’s government will collect in royalty revenue while the pipeline is operational will help support the schools, hospitals and essential services Albertans rely on.
“This listing sends a clear message: Canada is ready to build again. We are ready to harness our strengths, seize new opportunities and deliver the nation-building infrastructure our prosperity depends on.
“Alberta’s government, through the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Corporation, is proud to be working with the Government of Canada through Trans Mountain Corporation and with Pembina Pipeline Corporation to advance Pacific Link, which will move one million barrels of oil per day to Canada’s west coast and expand access to growing markets across the Asia-Pacific region.
“Indigenous partnership remains central to this project every step of the way. Working together, we have an opportunity to create lasting prosperity through meaningful participation, ownership and shared success.
“For too long, people across Canada have watched investment leave, projects stall and opportunities slip away. Today, we are turning the page. Pacific Link represents a bold vision for Canada, one built on growth, confidence and the understanding that Alberta energy should reach customers around the world. Our allies and trading partners are looking to Canada for secure, responsibly produced energy, and Alberta is ready to help deliver it.
“This milestone also demonstrates what is possible when governments work together in the national interest. It reflects a renewed spirit of cooperation focused on creating jobs across Canada, attracting investment, strengthening our economy and building the infrastructure that will secure Canada’s future.
“Canada is home to some of the world’s most abundant natural resources that are being developed by an industry that is a global leader in innovation and responsible production. The world needs what Canada has to offer, and Alberta is proud to lead the way.
“Alberta’s government will continue working with Indigenous communities, industry partners and the federal government to move Pacific Link forward and turn this extraordinary opportunity into lasting prosperity for generations to come.
Key facts:
- The Major Projects Office will work with the Canada Energy Regulator through a streamlined review process to issue a conditions document for Pacific Link by Sept. 1, 2027, following which construction can begin.
- Trans Mountain Corporation will develop, construct and operate the pipeline on behalf of the project proponents.
- Pacific Link will significantly grow Canada’s GDP, generating more than $20 billion per year when operational.
- Over the roughly 50-plus years this pipeline will be in operation, the Department of Treasury Board and Finance estimates that the Government of Alberta will receive more than $265 billion in additional royalties from the increased oil production to fill the pipeline.
