FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Victoria, BC – The Indigenous Resource Network (IRN) is pleased to hear today that Minister Osborne, Minister Heyman has granted Cedar LNG project with its environmental assessment certificate. Cedar LNG is perhaps the biggest in a long string of resource projects with Indigenous nations as equity owners, partners, and now proponents. It demonstrates the strong business and project capacity that has developed in our communities and shows a path for resource development in Canada going forward.

John Desjarlais, Board Chair and Spokesperson for IRN said “We are pleased to see the BC government move forward on this project. Cedar LNG is a first of its kind with an Indigenous proponent driving the project forward. We trust this approval will inspire further confidence in the value of meaningful Indigenous participation, expedite future processes, and move Canada further toward right size inclusive regulation”

Cedar LNG is a $3 billion floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) project that Haisla First Nation and Pembina Pipelines plan to build in Kitimat. This approval from the B.C. government means Canada is taking another step forward in reconciliation and self-determination. The own-source revenue generated from this project for Haisla First Nation will mean Haisla will be able to decide itself where to invest capital in their community.

“We hope to see more projects like Cedar LNG, where a community can stand on its own, be the project proponent, and make its own decisions on the environmental and socio-economic impact on the community.”
