Greg McLean, Shadow Minister for Natural Resources issued the following statement following the comments by Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources as published in the Financial Post:
“I appreciate Minister Wilkinson’s comments on the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) ‘Discussion Document’ prepared by his colleague, the Minister of Environment. This is not the first instance where the two Ministers words have been in stark conflict.
“The discussion document was ECCC’s way of backward engineering carbon reduction modelling numbers so that this Government can apply some rationality to the targets to which they have committed. Canadians know that this government has a perfect record of failure in meeting every target they have set.
“ECCC’s modeling was unable to arrive at forecasts from other sectors of the Canadian economy that would even approach the targets. Their solution was to thrust all the required reductions in their suspicious modelling onto the backs of Canada’s largest export industry – oil and gas production – which has already shown the most progress in Canada, and amongst its peers in the world, in lowering their carbon footprint.
“The scheme was unworkable from the outset and would have resulted in the shutdown of nearly half of Canada’s production. The knock-on effects on our economy, inflation, reductions in social services spending would have had Canadians reeling. All this, to propose a duplicate regulatory regime on an already highly regulated industry.
“I’m pleased this Minister has distanced himself from the nonsense document. I wish he would say so publicly to his Cabinet colleague, who is always moving in a different direction.”
