The Gussow 2022 Conference: Expanding Horizons will be dedicated to the exploration of opportunities for the geoscientist in the future energy, land, and water resources sectors of our world.

This event will examine how we can expand our horizons and determine how we in the geoscience and engineering community can help transition our world to a more sustainable future. Active mitigation such as carbon capture and storage will play a part, as will deep basin geothermal. Adaptation strategies around water management and land management practices will be critical, and regional-scale monitoring, geomatics, and “big data” analytics will be needed to ensure we are on course to meet our set goals of this transition period. While some may see this as a threat, others see it as an opportunity to pivot already-learned skills in a changing economic and political landscape.

Unlike past Gussow conferences, the 2022 edition has been purposefully designed to challenge the way we see our careers and identify pathways to new and exciting opportunities that will arise from the energy transition. From geological to geophysical to geochemical, all these aspects will play an important role in mitigating, and adapting, to the challenges that lay ahead. The changing role of hydrocarbons in our society is not the end, but the beginning of a new world where our professions play an important role if we expand our horizons and apply our skills in a new way.
