Introducing ScreenLogix® Hydrocarbon Screening Tool by Delta Remediation

Delta Remediation Feature Logo 400x270

Delta Remediation (Delta) has developed the ScreenLogix® Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) soil test kit that can quickly and effectively determine the type and concentration of hydrocarbon contamination in soils. This method of testing is known as a Friedel Crafts reaction. Friedel Crafts reaction is the synthesis of hydrocarbons and ketones by the alkylation or acylation of an aromatic compound in the presence of a catalyst

The soil test kit is extremely useful as an accurate, sensitive and inexpensive tool for the assessment of contamination in soil and by hydrocarbon compounds. ScreenLogix® is not designed to compete with laboratory sampling but rather guide the user on where to invest the lab sampling as well as to provide reliable data in the field.

ScreenLogix® is a simple to use screening kit that provides qualitative data in real-time. Pricing is volume dependent but much cheaper than competing products with each test costing $30 – $35 CAD depending on the kit size. Based on feedback and In an effort to reduce both waste and cost, ScreenLogix® refill kits will be available in the near future.

Delta Remediation’s ScreenLogix Test Kit Overview

Over the past 12 months, Delta has been working extensively with dozens extraction solvents and color reagents to develop the ScreenLogix® TPH kit. The following points were considered in the decision of chemistry to utilize.

  • Safety
  • Reactivity
  • Disposal/Environment
  • Cost

Delta tested potential chemical candidates on the following common hydrocarbon contaminants:

  • Gasoline
  • Diesel
  • Kerosene
  • Motor Oil
  • Hydraulic Oil
  • Lubricating Oil
  • Crude Oil
  • Bitumen

Procedure

  1. Place Kit on flat work area like tailgate or field office
  2. Write down sample details on bottle label
  3. Take out scoop and gather sample
  4. Place sample in disposable beakers provided
  5. Pour extraction solvent into beaker and mix thoroughly depending on soil type with stirring stick
  6. Remove on of the clear vials with reaction powder and remove lid
  7. Let solids from the beaker sample settle and then pour the into the vial with reagent powder
  8. Place lid on and mix solvent and powder then wait 2 minutes for result (see charts below)
  9. All waste (closed vials) should be placed in waste bag for proper disposal as per local regulations.

Safety

  1. NEVER mix water with the Aluminum Chloride powder mixture. Doing so will create hydrogen chloride (HCL) gas which is corrosive and harmful to humans.
  2. ALWAYS perform tests in a well-ventilated area.
  3. ALWAYS use PPE (Gloves, Mask & Glasses)
