Alstar Oilfield Logo Feature 400x270As Alstar Oilfield Contractors (‘Alstar’) forges ahead into its 50th year of business, the company looks forward with unwavering confidence, both for the country and for the energy construction industry.

Reaching this notable milestone has come with continual growth and development, primarily due to Alstar’s commitment to operating from its foundational family values, work ethic and dedication to its people. As the company has grown and become more complex over the past five decades, Alstar has maintained this foundation for providing quality oilfield facility and fabrication services.

Alstar’s Culture Starts with Its People

Founded in Calgary, Alberta in 1969, Alstar was positioned for growth at inception. The company moved from Calgary and was drawn to the oil and gas boom of the 70’s to the heart of Kaybob in Fox Creek. Alstar’s growth continued and shortly after, they expanded their shop and yard space into Hinton, Alberta. Expansion and growth continued with an additional offices and shops in Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and downtown Calgary.  Most recently, Alstar grew in size and expanded their service offerings with the acquisition of Plains Fabrication and Supply.

What is the common thread that contributed to this continued success in the growth of Alstar? The inherent belief that Alstar’s people are its champions and must be treated as such. This explains why management is devoted to creating a work environment that fosters growth, safety and loyalty. Their philosophy of dedication to people shows itself with the longevity of many employees, a number of which have organically grown into management positions in all locations.

Alstar fosters a culture committed to client-centric solutions, starting with the hands-on involvement of the management team throughout various phases of the project. By remaining close to the front lines of client relations, management can make decisions that directly impact the quality and efficiency of the work delivered to each client.

This close attention to the client begins with full transparency starting with project planning, pricing, and right through to execution. At the onset of a project, management works with the client closely to ensure an open and transparent relationship develop immediately, including a clear view of the framework and pricing of the project, as well as ample opportunity for honest input during the Early Construction Involvement Advantage program. As is true with companies that truly value the customer, Alstar’s management sees their own enjoyment in their work as a side product of the value the company provides to its clients. Devotion to the client experience delivers to both sides as a result of strategic long-term relationships.

Providing Greater Value

By focusing on long-term client relationships, along with the 2017 acquisition, Alstar expanded the development of the Fab & Follow model with an enhanced focus on quality, budget and schedule. This framework allows Alstar to have input on design, fabrication and all the components, followed by on-site installation.

With this ability to support design to completion, Alstar is able to fabricate a broad range of products and services, including steel, pipe, vessel and modular fabrication, as well as process equipment.  In addition, the increased mechanical and physical capacity allows more adaptability in solutions, ensuring the exact needs of the client are met, without losing quality. “We now have the ability increased capacity to fabricate and manage our products and services in one location, versus our clients having to manage various contracts with several vendors losing some control of quality and schedule,” explains Scott Fofonoff, Alstar Oilfield President and CEO.

Safety is an Ever-Evolving Non-Negotiable

While it is crucial for Alstar to provide quality from beginning to end, this can only be done when safety is top of mind. “Integrity and culture are non-negotiables both inside and outside the walls of Alstar,” says Fofonoff. “This includes our company’s approach to safety.”

As such, Alstar continually improves its Safety Management System. This program was developed alongside their clients, employees, and overall workforce to ensure the company remains on the leading edge of safety. As Fofonoff shares, Alstar brings a uniquely comprehensive approach to its safety standards. “It’s not just a binder that sits on the shelf, but an actual management system that we use from the executive level right down to the front-line workers to ensure that our people are getting what they need to return home safely.”

Alstar is the exemplification of Western Canada’s strength, growing only stronger over decades of constant change, while remaining committed to giving back to the communities in which they work. This strength and community dedication will remain as Alstar continues to push the boundaries of location and work, all while delivering an exceptional product and service in the energy industry.
