Project Overview
The Algar Lake Project involved the drilling of SAGD production wells and the construction of a facility capable of producing 5,000 – 8,000 barrels a day of bitumen South-West of Ft. McMurray.
The facility was an implementation of Grizzly’s Advanced, Relocatable, Modularized, Standardized (ARMS) central processing facility (CPF) for Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD).
Catch Engineering Engagement
Catch Engineering was engaged initially by Grizzly Oil Sands to review the engineering documentation produced to date and advise on supplemental design necessary to complete the project.
Catch Engineering’s scope grew to include:
- Power System Model Development and Power System Studies
- Protective Device Coordination and Programming
- FAT of Electrical Building including DeviceNet configurations, testing and pre-commissioning of starters, circuit breakers and control systems for 5kV and 600V lineups.
- Hazardous Area report and consulting
- Field E&I Construction Supervision and QA/QC
- Development and Issuance of control system loop drawings and schematics
- Ownership and Development of Instrument Index
- Field design activities
- Procurement
- Electric Heat Tracing design
Catch Engineering Key Contributions
- Development of Grizzly’s Classified Area philosophy, authoring a detailed report and advising on field modifications to incorporate the report recommendations. Due to the nature of the ARMS development, the Grizzly CPF is very tight quarters with very little separation of process areas.
- Power System design modifications were implemented to reduce the infrastructure costs and increase the reliability of equipment.
- The Electrical Building is the main power distribution for the facility. This tightly integrated building was completely tested in the fabrication yard before shipping to site.
