Governments must cut fuel taxes
- Taxes cost 27 cents per litre of gas and diesel in Alberta
- CTF releases Gas Tax Honesty report
CALGARY. AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the Alberta government to drop its provincial fuel tax and the federal government to keep its fuel tax cut as the CTF releases its annual Gas Tax Honesty Report.
“Albertans are fighting to afford these high prices at the pump and the provincial and federal governments both need to drop their fuel taxes now,” said Kris Sims, CTF Alberta Director during a press conference in Calgary. “The province needs to cut the Alberta fuel tax and oppose all carbon taxes.
“The feds need to scrap their plans to hike gas taxes next month.”
The CTF shows how much tax drivers are paying per litre of gasoline and diesel across Canada in its 28th annual Gas Tax Honesty Report.
Albertans pay 27 cents in federal and provincial taxes per litre of both gasoline and diesel.
The federal government suspended the federal excise tax in April, saving drivers 10 cents per litre of gasoline and four cents per litre of diesel. The federal government is set to hike the tax back up in September.
The CTF released Leger polling that shows that most Canadians oppose the federal government hiking fuel taxes in September. Detailed results of the poll show:
- 43 per cent strongly oppose the tax increase
- 20 per cent somewhat oppose the tax increase
- 17 per cent somewhat support the tax increase
- 8 per cent strongly support the tax increase
- 11 per cent don’t know
Among those decided on the issue, 71 per cent of Canadians oppose the fuel tax increase.
Filling up a minivan with gasoline in Alberta costs about $20 in taxes, while filling up a pickup truck costs about $30 and filling up a big rig diesel truck costs about $250 in taxes.
“Premier Danielle Smith needs to drop Alberta’s fuel tax and reject all carbon taxes in Alberta,” said Sims. “Prime Minister Mark Carney needs to stop his plans to hike the federal fuel tax back up and he must scrap the carbon taxes he’s pushing on all provinces.”
