In gas gathering, transmission, processing, and custody transfer, the quality of your measurement is only as good as the quality of your sample. Liquids, aerosols, and particulate that sneak into the sample stream can skew BTU/HHV and composition, cause analyzer trips, and drive unnecessary maintenance. A+ Corporation—pioneers of Genie® membrane technology—designs probes, separators, and conditioning components that protect analyzers and preserve sample integrity so decisions and dollars aren’t based on compromised data. As A+ Corporation’s Canadian distributor, Westech Industrial helps operators select, size, and support the right solution for their application.
The persistent sampling challenges
- Liquid carryover and aerosol mist
Even tiny amounts of entrained liquid—condensate, glycols, lube oil, water—can bias analysis and foul valves and columns. Industry guidance is clear: remove liquids at flowing temperature and pressure to avoid phase shifts that change composition before it reaches the analyzer. - Phase changes between tap and analyzer
Pressure and temperature drops in lines can condense heavier components in “rich” gases. If you condition after the fact, you’re correcting the symptom, not the cause—and you risk reporting the wrong gas. - Probe-tip upsets in wet pipelines
Slugging, vibration, and transient flow can force liquids into conventional probes and filters, causing frequent element changes and downtime. - Portable and spot-sampling exposure
Ambient moisture and dust can contaminate portable analyzer inlets if you don’t provide first-stage protection right at the hose.
Why A+ Corporation’s Genie® technology changes the game
Separate liquids at the source (and at line conditions).
Genie® Membrane Separators™ remove 100% of entrained liquids and particulate from gas samples—stopping liquids before they can bias results or damage equipment. Unlike coalescers that can pass aerosols, the membrane rejects liquids on its surface and diverts them to drain/bypass.
Do it at the probe tip, inside the pipeline.
Genie® Probe Regulators (GPR) and the Model 755 membrane-tip probe regulator place the membrane and pressure regulation inside the pipe—exactly where standards expect liquid removal to happen. This minimizes dead volume, reduces lag time, and preserves composition. Vibration-resistant design and J-slot safety features aid safe insertion/removal.
Protect portable analyzers, too.
For ambient or portable work, compact separators (e.g., Model 142) add a low-volume, in-line barrier to steam, fog, aerosols, and dust—extending instrument life and improving repeatability in the field.
Engineer full systems when needed.
When sampling gets complex (e.g., storage facilities, custody transfer skids, dehydration units), A+ creates tailored sample systems that still follow Analytically Correct™ principles—conditioning only what’s necessary, where it belongs.
Where these solutions fit in Oil & Gas
- Transmission & distribution: Keep BTU/HHV and composition accurate despite wet gas or transient upsets. Genie® membrane-tip probe regulators (e.g., Model 755 / GPR) intercept liquids at line conditions and regulate pressure immediately downstream of the membrane.
- Gas processing (inlet & outlet checks): Prevent carryover of amine or glycol mists into GCs/FTIRs; safeguard analyzers and valves. Series 100/120/133 membrane separators are proven first-stage defenses.
- Storage facilities: Manage condensation risk after temperature/pressure changes and avoid bias in composition reporting and odorization control. A+ details these pitfalls and mitigation in their technical write-ups.
- Custody transfer skids: Preserve representativeness and reduce lag time by eliminating dead volume between tap and first separation/regulation stage.
- Portable/spot sampling & emissions checks: Add Model 142 to the sample hose for quick, low-volume protection against moisture and particulates.
Product snapshot (popular picks)
- Genie® Model 755 Membrane-Tip Probe Regulator — Adjustable length, membrane at the tip, pressure regulation inside the line; built to operate at flowing conditions per industry guidance. Ideal for transmission-quality gas.
- Genie® GPR (Probe Regulator) family — Membrane separation + regulation at the probe; low internal volume and vibration resistance reduce lag and maintenance. Optional manifolds with gauge/valving available.
- Genie® Supreme Series 120 / 133 Membrane Separators™ — Remove 100% of entrained liquids/particulate; excellent for low-flow GC feeds and analyzer protection where aerosols are a concern.
- Genie® Supreme Series 225 (Liquid Hydrocarbons) — Designed to filter suspended, immiscible liquids in liquid hydrocarbon samples. (Available from Westech in Canada.)
- Genie® Model 142 (Portable) — Compact, low internal volume separator for ambient/portable gas analyzers.
- Genie® Model 701 Portable Insertion Probe — Simple, safe way to extract representative vapor-phase samples from a gas source when you’re on the move.
Results you can expect
- Better data, fewer trips: Removing liquids at the source prevents analyzer upset and protects columns, valves, and detectors.
- Faster response, lower bias: Low internal volume at the probe and elimination of dead legs reduce lag time and composition shift.
- Safer, simpler maintenance: Purpose-built insertion and J-slot safety designs reduce risk during probe service; optional manifolds simplify isolation and venting.
