In 1978, The Canadian Energy Geoscience Association (CEGA), previously called Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG), created the CSPG Foundation. The goal of the Foundation is to fund and support educational petroleum geoscience outreach across Canada, such as the Student Industry Field Trip, Student Scholarships, Atlas 2027, and the Alberta Paleontological Society Fund.
Student Industry Field Trip (SIFT)
Each year, 24 students from university geoscience programs across Canada are invited to Calgary to participate in a two-week intensive petroleum industry field trip known as SIFT. Throughout SIFT students will participate in lectures, workshops, core sessions, field trips and a real-life exploration game that expose them to the many aspects of the oil and gas industry within Canada. What began in 1977 as a humble four-day field trip to expose students to the geology of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, has now grown to become Canada’s premier geoscience education event.
SIFT provides students with what could be their first exposure to the petroleum industry and provides the opportunity for students to begin building their networks for a career within the oil and gas industry.
Scholarships/Awards
The CSPG Foundation provides funding for student-related scholarships, such as: the Undergraduate Student Scholarship, the Regional Graduate Scholarship, and the Graduate Thesis Awards. Each of these programs provides financial support to the education of Geology or Earth Science students.
Atlas 2027
Atlas 2027 represents the mammoth undertaking to renew the classic 1994 Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, published by CSPG and the Alberta Research Council (predecessors to CEGA and the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS)). Like the previous Atlas, this version will take seven years to compile, require support from multiple agencies, and thousands of hours of commitment from hundreds of authors and volunteers. Combined with the data of hundreds of thousands of wells, outcrop observations, and remote sensing, the final result will be one of the most extensive geological treatises ever published.
Alberta Palaeontological Society Fund
The Alberta Palaeontological Society (APS) in cooperation with the Palaeontological Division of CEGA hosts educational and public outreach events and projects throughout the year for the purposes of presenting, sharing and discussing the science of palaeontology with both professional geoscientists and the general public.
