western economic corridor announcement at the recover facility

On February 15, 2023, Recover hosted the Western Economic Corridor (WEC) announcement at our facility and Recover would like to thank all those who attended the event.

Located 90 minutes west of Edmonton, Brazeau County has, for generations, been a longstanding driver of Alberta’s economy, exhibited by robust energy (oil and gas, as well as emerging opportunities related to hydrogen and geothermal), agricultural, and forestry sectors. In fact, before the inception of the oilsands, Brazeau County was Alberta’s largest petroleum producer. Recognizing the need for continual economic growth in rural Alberta and the need to augment the current industrial base, Brazeau County Council approved the WEC initiative in 2022.

The WEC, while still in its infancy, represents a new industrial cluster within Alberta, akin to Alberta’s Industrial Heartland (IH), led by Strathcona County and the Greenview Industrial Gateway (GIG), led by the MD of Greenview. While the GIG and IH are primarily focused on hydrocarbon processing, the WEC’s mandate is to attract investments that create a clean technology commercialization hub, facilitating partnership opportunities between carbon-intensive industries like the oil and gas sector and WEC industry members, augmenting decarbonization and environmental, social, governance (ESG) scores.

“When Reeve Bart Guyon approached Recover about the Western Economic Corridor, we were immediately supportive. The vision is to highlight this area and create jobs by attracting clean tech investments, all to better the province of Alberta and the people who call Brazeau County home. This is Recover’s story about our experiences here in Brazeau so that other clean-tech companies that are looking for a home understand why they should choose this area.

Recover is an Alberta-based waste-to-fuel company that has developed a solvent extraction facility that recovers and recycles oil-based drilling waste.

Oil-based drilling fluid is the predominant fluid used to drill modern horizontal oil and gas wells in North America and with its use, the industry creates oil-based drilling waste. Lacking a recycling method, industry had to default to managing the liability. This means mixing the waste with sawdust and sending it to a Class II landfill, where it biodegrades and produces significant volumes of GHG emissions. Recover’s technology recycles the base oil, thereby reducing landfill volumes and avoiding the emissions associated with biodegradation. This is a first-of-its-kind facility anywhere in the world and is another great example of Alberta innovation leading the cleantech sector and providing sustainable solutions not only for application in Alberta but for the rest of the world.

There are many factors that influence a company looking to locate in a new area. For Recover, Brazeau County included a lucrative local tax and regulatory structure, an excellent road and civil infrastructure network, an abundance of drilling activity, and a supportive municipal government. Brazeau County is a community that we’ve come to depend on. Our facility and technology are successful because we were able to find a local workforce and a local service sector in the WEC region that supports our operations. Not only did we find machine shops and electrical contractors that were willing to help us build and install proprietary process equipment, but we also found other innovators and like-minded proponents of the WEC vision to benefit all Albertans. Companies like Mojo Trucking who pioneered the development of fully sealed trailers to safely transport feedstock to our facility, and companies like HVO, who helped offer ideas for the reuse of our clean cuttings as a stabilization agent for other wastes.

Since we resumed operations post-COVID, Recover has accepted 2,000 loads of oil base drilling waste, recycled more than 40,000 barrels of refined base oil and avoided up to 68,000 tonnes of GHG emissions. Recover is an example of how industry and community can come together to develop cutting-edge technology that generates wealth while addressing the need to be environmentally responsible. Recover is proud to endorse the Western Economic Corridor.”
