The environmental impact of testing for (and producing of) oil and natural gas, demands careful management. More than ever there’s a need for more efficient options to deal with the combustion of waste gases to reduce oil producer’s environmental impact.
Our partners Total Combustion Inc. (TCI) started developing new and unique technology for the incineration of waste gases in the late 1990’s when the company was a privately owned oilfield service company that sold and rented patented incineration equipment for the purpose of efficiently combusting waste gas. The group quickly recognized the growing need to find an alternative to traditional flaring. TCI’s initiative took existing traditional refractory incineration stack technology, reworked the design, combining it with a new technology used to cool the smokestacks of battle ships. This new smokestack technology lowered the temperature signature of the ships smokestack making it invisible to incoming heat seeking missiles. TCI then matched this cooling effect technology with an improved burner design that premixed air and waste gas prior to the point of ignition to create a more complete combustion system.
Following a two-year trial and error process, TCI placed two units on field sites owned by major oil and natural gas companies and both units were able to combust efficiently with no smoke, no odor, and no visible flame. The successful performance convinced both residents and oilfield operators that TCI’s new stack and burner designed incineration equipment was a viable option to flaring.
Twenty-four years later the company has grown and is now used by thousands of companies all over the world. Some common applications include tank vapors, gas storage, dehydrator vapor, separator gas, casing gas, BTEX Vapors, pipeline pigging stations and tanker loading stations.
TCI’s clean combustion technology boasts a 99.8% combustion efficiency and is an environmentally friendly alternative to flaring. Its units have no smoke, no odor and no visible flame during normal operations. They use venturi aspirated burners for good premixing of waste gas and air, and do not require combustion air blowers. Power to operate the regulatory compliant burner management system can be supplied by a small solar power system.
They also offer mobile and skid mounted waste gas incineration rental units which are simple to use and self-contained. Most units comply with a 75% road ban and set up with zero ground disturbance. TCI’s combustion technology can effectively conceal flame and is ideal for confidential well testing. All units comply with the Alberta Government’s Directive 60 regarding oilfield incineration.
