Flame and detonation arresters are designed and tested to provide vapour handling systems with protection against flashbacks & explosions. The flame arresters are a passive device requiring no power, pneumatics, or water levels to stop fuel combustion. This is accomplished by the internal flame arrester elements absorbing the heat from a flame or explosion extinguishing the flames.

Flame Arresters must be inspected and serviced on a regular basis to ensure their effectiveness. Many standards organizations mandate routine inspection to ensure safe operation. For example, the USCG mandates and minimum annual inspection.
During normal operating conditions the flame / detonation arrester acts as a filter in the piping system. Anything travelling through the pipe will ultimately land on the flame arrester elements… rust, particulates, debris, and liquid droplets will accumulate over time and thus will require service & cleaning.
Poorly maintained, corroded, or damaged elements may not be capable of providing the explosion protection they were designed for. In addition, clogged elements will increase the pressure drop and may cause back pressure in the system, causing process delays. Thus, cleaning and service is essential to allow free vapour flow.
