The increasing complexity and higher drilling cost of horizontal wells demand research and development of real time as well as post-analysis drilling software in the oil and gas industry. The weight on bit (WOB) is a measurement of downward force applied to the formation by the drill string while drilling. In an extended reach horizontal wellbore, the downhole weight on bit (DWOB) significantly changes due to the effects of friction, as the drill string is in contact with the wellbore, changes in drilling fluid properties, changes in cuttings loading in the wellbore, changes in hydrostatic pressure (cuttings load, pump rate, fluid properties). The real time estimation and monitoring of DWOB is highly effective to optimize the rate of penetration (ROP), drill bit life as well as to improve the overall drilling performance.

Rocsol’s real-time DWOB software, RT-DWOB uses unique algorithms developed through scientific research, to estimate the coefficient of friction and downhole WOB accurately from the routinely collected drilling data in real time environment. Our software’s accuracy has been tested and verified against downhole WOB measurement tools.

The features and functionalities of Rocsol’s RT-DWOB software:

  • A combined 3D wellbore friction model (T&D) is used to calculate coefficient of friction (CoF) and downhole weight on bit (DWOB) from the time-based drilling data in real time horizontal drilling.
  • Option to select the inputs/outputs (I/O) data unit system, metric or imperial.
  • Standard data communication protocol, Modbus TCP is used for the real-time data transmission between the user’s Server system (master) and Rocsol’s RT-DWOB (slave).
  • Usability to define the sensor position of the surface hook load measurement for accurate real time analysis.
  • User-defined options to manage the data frequency and I/O data logs.
  • Mandatory software licensing for the end user.
  • Optional feature: calculation routine to estimate DWOB while sliding in lateral section.
  • Realtime I/O data monitoring interface.
  • Features to copy and save the CoF and DWOB plots.
  • Save outputs in text and LAS file formats.

In addition, Rocsol has developed a real time DWOB technology compatible to work with the cloud based MAXedge services. It would also be possible to write new code within our software to make this technology workable with the oil and gas data transmission standard, WITSML (Wellsite Information Transfer Standard Markup Language).
