Directive 055, formerly known as Guide 55, is the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) program that ensures the proper management of storage tanks in the upstream oil and gas sector. Primarily, the Directive exists to mitigate environmental contamination from storage tanks.
Directive 055 dates back to July 1995, when the Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) developed the Interim Directive (ID) 95-3 and Guide 55: Storage Requirements for the Upstream Petroleum Industry. Since then, Directive 055 has undergone a few changes.
In 2001, the Directive’s scope expanded to include tanks that store waste. A few of the fluids included in this updated directive are produced water, crude oil, lubricants, oily waste, bitumen and produced sand. Please see the link below for a complete list.
Any non-compliance with Directive 055 may result in the use of AER enforcement tools. These range from a written letter of non-compliance to the prosecution and declaration of a named individual.
