Scovan and Recover® complete sustainable waste management project.

Scovan Engineering successfully completes Recover® Energy Services Inc. Lodgepole Waste Management Facility Debottleneck Project.

Recover® Energy Services Lodgepole Waste Management Facility, located west of Drayton Valley, Alberta provides a solution for off-lease drilling waste remediation. The facility meets Alberta Energy Regulator’s Directive 058 requirements and waste management practices, providing environmental protection while recovering base oil from drilling waste.

Project Scope:

The Recover® ‘Debottlenecking Project’ aims to increase the drilling waste processing volume to 100% of the facility design, with a re-start of the facility in mid November 2019.

The ‘Debottlenecking Project’ included the addition of new (CEMA) screw conveyors, proprietary wash tanks and additional solids drying equipment.  To service this new equipment, the utility transformer was upgraded as well as modifications made to the main power distribution equipment and site control system equipment.

Scovan Engineering was employed to provide structural engineering and design, electrical engineering and design, as well as piping design for this endeavor.

The Challenge:

The existing facility consisted of a main processing building which housed all the current conveyors and major solvent extraction equipment to clean and separate solids and hydrocarbon liquids. Scovan was tasked with generating the construction packages to install and house the addition of new equipment in the same building within three months’ time.

The Solution:

Because of the space constraints and the large size of the new equipment to be installed, there was active communication between Recover® and Scovan during the engineering and design phase of the project. Scovan implemented a fit-for-purpose  execution strategy that was flexible in order to capture the various changes and to maintain alignment as the project progressed. As a result, Scovan was able to provide quick and responsive solutions for the unique design challenges associated with this project.  In addition, many of the off-the-shelf components were not specifically designed for the intended use and required close collaboration with suppliers, detailed review and analysis of the designs, and modifications to ensure a safe and fit-for-purpose integration into the facility.

Scovan worked closely as a team to achieve the goals of the project and actively sought out opportunities to streamline the construction process.  Scovan has an experienced team that creates designs with operations and construction teams in mind to minimize the amount of rework required during construction and commissioning. Through frequent one-on-one communication with the client, and group meetings with the designers and engineers, the project was able to move from a design concept to construction within an aggressive three-month window.

Current Project Status:

Scovan was able to complete the scope from project kick-off in May 2019 with the delivery of the construction package in August 2019.

Construction is trending under budget despite a delay in equipment delivery. Current re-start of the Lodgepole facility is expected in mid November 2019.
