The Situation – The energy industry is at a crossroads. On one hand, technology is at the forefront and it is pushing the capabilities and limits of what we can accomplish. However, with constrained capital, companies face the decision whether to be leaders or laggards in adopting these enhancements.
So What? As practitioners, it is imperative that we understand the value proposition of technologies such as smart contracts and how they are evolving the way we conduct business. Join PASC as we present a panel of professionals involved in the design and implementation of progressive innovations. Each panelist will discuss his/her passions and perspective on the impending digital transformation.
The Joint Venture Audit “Hit List” and how it impacts you (panel)
The Situation – The new competitive landscape places greater constraints on resources. In turn, there are higher expectations for Joint Venture audit recoveries given the time and effort spent. Subsequently, effective auditors are proficient at using their limited resources to quickly determine key areas of focus and hone in on specific issues to raise, and their findings can often expose deeper underlying issues!
What’s in it for me? Being proactive and pre-emptive is advantageous for professionals and is also beneficial for companies. With a greater understanding of what auditors tend to look out for, developing enhanced organizational processes and procedures becomes a natural side-effect. Joy Romero: VP Technology & Innovation at CNRL
Joy Romero has a career spanning more than 30 years, having worked in iron ore, coal and oil sands in both operations and consulting. Her early career was focused on coal. In 1997, she moved to oil sands joining SNC-Lavalin to be a part of the team that built the Suncor Millennium project. In 2001, Joy joined Canadian Natural to steward the development, commissioning and operation of Bitumen Production within the Horizon Oil Sands Project. She was the chair of the Canadian Oilsands Network for Research and Development’s (CONRAD) Bitumen Production Focus Group and is past Chair of CONRAD overall, a member of the Shareholder Steering Committee and Chair for the Board and HR Committee of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), and a Board member of PTAC. In April of 2014, Joy was appointed a member of the Government of Canada’s Science, Technology and Innovation Council (STIC).

Cody’s commitment and dedication to technology & Innovation is evident through all aspects of his career and volunteer efforts. Most notably, his professional volunteer roles include serving as the President of the Petroleum Accountants Society of Canada (PASC) where he is leading an initiative to create an industry first “smart contract” ready accounting procedure. Cody is also a current candidate for the CPA Alberta board of directors focusing on disruptive accounting technologies and innovations.
Never one to be satisfied with the status quo, Cody has become increasingly involved in disruptive technologies such as Blockchain and AI, which led him to co-found a technology based startup, Integrity Technology Solutions, where he has taken on the role of Director of Business Operations. On top of Cody’s career and volunteer efforts, Cody is a hard-working student and is currently finishing his MBA program at the University of Calgary specializing in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
Terrance Chmelyk: Vice President Spartan Controls
Terry has been involved in the Automation, Process Control & Optimization industry for over 28 years and brings a wealth of experience on how technology is changing the energy space. His passion is generating sustainable business results for industrial customers through the innovative application of advanced technologies. Technology has advanced significantly over the years, however, the “magic” is bringing together the people and processes to make it all work. The management of change is still one of the biggest challenges, and I have learned that engaging people with the right training and work processes is critical to the long-term success of an automation project.
Dan Chan: Manager R&D/Business Development at Enverus
Dan has an extensive background in the development for digital transformation tools like EnergyLink and brings a digital systems perspective to the panel.
