Thousands of people gathered outside the Alberta government’s McDougall Centre’s grounds in downtown Calgary on Tuesday afternoon to voice their support for oil pipelines as the future of a major federaly approved project hangs in the balance.
The crowd was very boisterous in calling for both Ottawa and Alberta’s NDP government to take further action to ensure the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project goes ahead.
Canada Action helped to coordinate the rally along with Rally for Resources.
According to Canada Action, “it’s time for the majority of Canadians who do support these projects and who do respect the rule of law to speak up and be heard. More than 40 First Nations support the pipeline. Global oil demand is growing. We all win when Canada’s resource sector is strong. The only winner of blocking these pipelines is other oil producing countries with weaker environmental standards.”
The Calgary protest featured speakers Alberta UCP Leader Jason Kenney, the Alberta NDP’s Municipal Affairs Minister Shaye Anderson and federal Conservative MP Michelle Rempel.
The loudest cheers were for Jason Kenny who asked if Prime Minister Trudeau was prepared to stand up and act like a national leader and take the necessary actions required to get the Trans Mountain pipeline built in the interest of the tens of thousands of people that work in Canada’s energy industry and for all the benefits that energy industry provides for all Canadians.
