Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until its conditions are satisfied and the United States fulfils commitments under an earlier interim agreement, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said Sunday.

Qalibaf’s comments, reported by Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, reinforce Tehran’s determination to use control of the strategic waterway as leverage in its confrontation with Washington.

Iran’s previously stated demands include lifting the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, removing sanctions on its oil exports, releasing frozen Iranian assets and ending military operations and threats against the country.

The United States and Iran reached an interim agreement in June, but it quickly unravelled amid disputes over control of shipping through Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump subsequently declared the agreement over, while Tehran suspended its participation.

The strait is one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Before the current conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil and LNG supplies moved through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea.

Iran’s restrictions have sharply reduced tanker traffic, disrupted Gulf energy exports and added a significant geopolitical risk premium to global oil prices. The latest warning suggests those disruptions could continue unless diplomatic negotiations produce a broader agreement.

The situation has become even more serious following renewed fighting in Yemen. Iran-backed Houthi forces have strengthened their position near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another critical shipping route linking the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean.

With shipping threatened at both Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, global oil and LNG markets face the possibility of prolonged supply disruptions and continued price volatility.

Reuters reported that Iran reiterated Sunday that Hormuz would remain closed until the June agreement’s terms—as Tehran interprets them—are implemented.
