In an era of shifting trade policies and geopolitical tensions, Canada, Poland, and Ukraine face a shared challenge: navigating the impact of U.S. tariffs while ensuring energy security. With tariffs affecting Canadian exports and potential new tariffs on European goods, the urgency for collaboration has never been greater.
Canada, with its vast natural resources; Poland, a strategic energy hub in Europe; and Ukraine, with its growing energy potential, have a unique opportunity to build a strong alliance. By working together, they can mitigate the adverse effects of tariffs, strengthen their energy independence, and drive innovation in the energy sector.
A Diplomatic and Economic Framework for Collaboration
This energy cooperation is not emerging in isolation—it is backed by strong diplomatic and economic agreements that already facilitate trade and investment between Canada, Poland, and Ukraine.
The Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA) was recently modernized in 2023, further strengthening trade relations between the two nations. This agreement eliminates tariffs, encourages investment, and creates a legal framework for Canadian businesses to engage with Ukraine’s growing energy sector.
Similarly, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union, including Poland, has proven significant success. Since its provisional application in 2017, trade between Canada and Poland has surged by 72%, reaching $3.8 billion in 2023. Canadian exports to Poland totaled $836 million, while imports stood at $3 billion—demonstrating Poland’s critical role as a trade and energy partner.
These agreements signal clear political support at the highest levels for deeper economic integration. As a result, private sector investors, such as Canadian Energy Ventures (CEV), are responding to these diplomatic and trade commitments by pioneering capital investments and business collaborations. This proactive approach ensures that economic and energy partnerships evolve beyond rhetoric into tangible solutions that benefit all three regions.
Expanding Benefits to Central Europe
The impact of this cooperation extends beyond Canada, Poland, and Ukraine—it has the potential to strengthen energy security for the entire Central European region. Countries like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Baltic states remain vulnerable to supply disruptions and price volatility, particularly in the wake of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
A coordinated effort between Canada, Poland, and Ukraine could provide greater access to reliable energy sources, mainly through liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. Poland’s LNG terminal in Świnoujście and its upcoming FSRU in Gdańsk could serve as critical gateways for Canadian LNG, supplying Poland and its neighbors. By integrating Ukraine’s pipeline infrastructure, LNG shipments could reach Central Europe deeper, reducing Russian energy dependency and enhancing regional stability.
Canadian Energy Ventures: A Platform for Action
Canadian Energy Ventures (CEV), a newly established company dedicated to fostering energy partnerships between Canada, Poland, and Ukraine, is at the forefront of this vision. CEV is a consulting firm and a networking platform that facilitates business connections and advances energy cooperation across these key regions.
To drive this collaboration forward, CEV is hosting its inaugural seminar on February 19th. This online event will focus on the role of natural gas in the evolving energy landscape and bring together industry experts, policymakers, and business leaders to explore strategies for strengthening energy ties.
Building on this momentum, CEV will host an in-person event in Warsaw, Poland, on March 11th, providing industry leaders and stakeholders a unique opportunity to deepen their cooperation. Future events in Calgary will further strengthen transatlantic energy partnerships.
Join the Conversation – Unlock Energy Diversification with LNG Opportunities
As the global energy landscape grows more complex, partnerships between Canada, Poland, and Ukraine offer a foundation for stability, cooperation, and progress. Backed by CUFTA and CETA, this collaboration responds to market pressures and is a strategic alignment of political intent and private-sector action. Together, these nations can turn challenges into opportunities, ensuring a more secure and sustainable energy future—not just for themselves but for all of Central Europe.
