Families and businesses across the world need responsibly produced Canadian LNG now more than ever before!
As we have seen over the past few years, natural gas shortages can result in serious real-world consequences, especially for developed regions like Europe that rely on the fossil fuel as an input for everything from home heating to industrial manufacturing to fertilizer production.
In the worst case scenarios:
> Families end up with unaffordable energy bills and have to choose between cooking food and a warm shower [1].
> Small businesses cannot afford expensive electricity and also must make consequential financial decisions [2].
> Whole industries are forced to consider shuttering their doors for good unless they switch back to coal or oil for their energy needs – which is not good for the environment [3][4].
Germany, Japan and South Korea are just some countries that have asked Canada for more of our responsible, reliable natural gas to help avoid the consequences of energy shortages – but to no avail [5][6]. Instead, our allies have been forced to turn to other less responsible exporters like Qatar [7].
And while more than a dozen countries expedite the development of their LNG industries, Canada is left behind twiddling its thumbs.
It just doesn’t make sense. Canadians are missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a global LNG supplier of choice.
Why Canadian LNG is good for Canadian families, Indigenous communities and the world at large:
> Canadian LNG projects will produce some of the least-carbon-intensive gas for facilities of their kind in the world [8][9][10]
> With global LNG consumption expected to rise 76% by 2040 [15], Japan South Korea and Germany are just a few countries who prefer Canadian-made LNG because of our reliability and shared democratic values [5][6]
> Indigenous-led projects like Cedar LNG and Ksi Lisims LNG are seen as a means of economic reconciliation by First Nations [11]
> West Coast LNG projects are regulated to reach net zero emissions by 2030 for approval, with some committed to reaching net zero before then [12][13]
> By displacing coal-fired power in Asia, Canadian LNG can reduce global emissions equivalent to removing 41 million cars off Canadian roads. HINT: In 2019, there were only 36 million registered vehicles in the country [14]
> A healthy west coast LNG sector in BC could generate over $500 billion in economic activity, nearly 97,000 more jobs a year, and $6 billion in wages for Canadian and Indigenous families [16]
Despite having 18 proposed LNG projects in Canada over the past few decades, only one (LNG Canada) is currently under construction. During the same time, the U.S. has managed to build seven major LNG export facilities, with many more on the way to fulfill growing global demand [17].
It is time that Canada gets into the game, for the benefit of Canadian families, Indigenous communities, global energy security and climate action.
