CALGARY, AB — A new methane emissions management program is seeking Expressions of Interest for Alternative Fugitive Emissions Program (Alt-FEMP) proposals and methane leak detection and monitoring technology trials.
The Alberta Methane Emissions Program (AMEP) is a three-year $17.6 million initiative to support methane emissions reductions that is funded by the Government of Alberta through the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund. Carbon Management Canada (CMC) and the Sundre Petroleum Operators Group (SPOG) were selected earlier this year through a competitive process to deliver the program.
“Carbon Management Canada is proud to have been selected to manage this program with the Sundre Petroleum Operators Group,” said Stephen Lougheed, CEO and President of CMC. “Reducing methane emissions is a critical step in supporting Alberta and Canada to reach greenhouse gas targets and grow Canada’s economy.”
Tracey McCrimmon, Executive Director of SPOG said, “SPOG has a 30-year history of bringing stakeholders together to meaningfully address environmental challenges. We are proud to continue on this path by working with our partner CMC to deliver the Alberta Methane Emissions Program.”
PROGRAM AIMS TO ENABLE REDUCTIONS
The AMEP is intended to enable methane emission reductions in Alberta’s oil and gas sector, while supporting regulatory reviews, improving understanding of emission sources, reducing costs to industry, and assuring best practices regarding methane detection and management.
Its focus is on the acceleration of Alt-FEMP proposals, data management and analytics systems, and the development of novel technologies that improve leak detection. Currently, the AMEP is calling for expressions of interest in two program areas – Alt-FEMPS and new technology trials.
The program is intended for use by industries and service companies in the oil and gas sector that are developing processes or technologies to reduce methane leaks and emissions. This includes leak detection and monitoring technology providers as well as duty holders required to manage methane emissions under the Alberta Energy Regulator’s Directive 60. Academic researchers working on new technologies and processes are also able to apply. Notably for Alt-FEMPs, the AMEP is structured to give preference and funding support to collaborative programs that involve multiple companies and organizations.
