Multi-Z Cavitation Elimination Application

Produced water is a term used in the oil industry to describe water that is produced when oil and gas are extracted from the ground. Oil and gas reservoirs have a natural water layer (formation water) that lies under the hydrocarbons. Oil reservoirs frequently contain large volumes of water, while gas reservoirs tend to have smaller quantities. To achieve maximum oil recovery additional water is often injected into the reservoirs to help force the oil to the surface. Both the formation water and the injected water are eventually produced along with the oil and therefore as the field becomes depleted the produced water content of the oil increases.

A standard globe control valve would not be successful in this application due to the produced water’s high sand and chloride content. The abrasiveness of the media would erode the plug and seat of the globe valve, causing the valve to fail. It would be a significant price increase to build the plug out of a high-strength alloy with excellent corrosion resistance to the high chloride content. The proper control valve for this application would have the ability to handle large pressure drops, high solids content, and corrosive environments.

The Multi-Z is specifically designed for severe service applications containing cavitation, noise, or dirty fluid (solids in media). The key feature of the Multi-Z for this application is its Notch style trim that allows high-pressure drop and velocities to occur away from the seat. This keeps the media in turbulent flow and the solids in suspension.
