Alberta is often viewed as the center of the Canadian oil & gas industry. But in terms of the Canadian refining industry, the process of turning crude oil into its final products, Eastern Canada takes the lead.

Canada ranks 11^th in the world in refining capacity with 17 refineries and a total refining capacity of over 1.9 million barrels per day (MMb/d).

The industry was for 2.6% of Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions in 2018.

In 2019, 1.72 million barrels per day was shipped daily to domestic refineries producing 2.5 million barrels of petroleum products.

In 2019, 81% of the 106 billion litres of refined products used by Canadians daily was for transportation fuels.
