Alberta is often viewed as the center of the Canadian oil & gas industry. But in terms of the Canadian refining industry, the process of turning crude oil into its final products, Eastern Canada takes the lead.
Canada ranks 11th in the world in refining capacity with 17 refineries and a total refining capacity of over 1.9 million barrels per day (MMb/d).
The industry was for 2.6% of Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions in 2018.
In 2019, 1.72 million barrels per day was shipped daily to domestic refineries producing 2.5 million barrels of petroleum products.
In 2019, 81% of the 106 billion litres of refined products used by Canadians daily was for transportation fuels.
