By Robin Finley, Vice President Operations – Finley Inspection Services Ltd.
This month in 1971, a young 26-year-old southern Alberta farm boy, with a newborn son at home (first of three) took a leap and became an entrepreneur for the first time, starting his own company.
He left his secure job with Husky Energy and placed a bet on himself and his family. He and his wife raised three sons through the ups and downs of the energy industry. They survived several commodity price crashes, transitions in government, the dreaded National Energy Program and many world events. There were years when work was abundant and periods where it was scarce or non-existent. “You haven’t been in the oil patch long if you haven’t gone from bologna sandwiches to steak sandwiches and back again” was a saying around our home.
In the modern oil patch competitors comes in all shapes and sizes from the largest industrial personnel companies operating on volume and slim margins, to the mom and pops where relationships and people matter. The company has always been based on honesty, integrity and you get what you pay for! Contract construction supervision is a vital part of the energy supply chain where projects can be in the billions and the longevity of assets and safety of the people involved are dependent on a willingness to never compromise and consistently deliver quality. When inspectors work for Finley Inspection, they are not a number, they are part of the family. Whether it is making sure someone with the last name FINLEY always returns the call or an enthusiastic, generous hug from Teresa at a corporate onboarding session.
Finley Inspection Services is proud to be celebrating our 50th anniversary this month! The company was founded by Larry Finley and his wife Teresa. Sadly, Larry passed away in 2018 before seeing this 50th anniversary milestone. Their sons all make their living in the energy industry and are proud Albertans.
Finley Inspection Services is certainly not the biggest, but the case has been made that they are among the best. A company where word of mouth drives business, such that a company without a website can be a preferred supplier to one of the largest integrated oil companies in the world (we have a website now). The company was built around the people who put the Irish green FINLEY sticker on their white hard hat symbolizing they are the inspectors on site, and here to make sure the job is done right. Larry started off as one of those inspectors in the field and always found a way to balance the clients needs with fair treatment of his people.
The energy industry has many stories like this, honest, hard working people who provide for their families through thick and thin, fueling the Canadian economy and making Canada an inhabitable and prosperous country.
Take a moment, and please share, comment or like this article. It would mean the world to my Dad and his family. Even though he is not here to see it, somehow, I think he would know. He would smile behind his big moustache, tip his cowboy hat in approval, take a sip on his Bacardi and Coke and enjoy a ride on his steed, knowing the honesty and integrity he built his business around remains intact.
