How did you Recognize Distracted Driving Awareness Month? – Assetworks

Although practicing safe driving practices should always be a focus for fleet organizations, the month of April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This month is a good opportunity to review safety practices with your drivers and take a look at updated statistics from the past year.

According to Finder.com, approximately 138 million Americans admit to being distracted while driving. Out of all generations, millennials are the most likely to be distracted by other activities, like texting or social media.

One of the most troubling statistics from this study involves the speed limit. Approximately 70 million Americans admitted to speeding behind the wheel.

America averages around 16 million vehicle accidents each year, so it is never a bad time to review your organization’s safety procedures and policies with your fleet drivers. Safety is, after all, a team effort. You should team up with your maintenance team or third party service company monthly to ensure all vehicles are receiving necessary maintenance and are driving to company standards and PMI compliance.

If you haven’t already done so, creating a manual for the drivers to keep in their trucks would be a great addition to your safety operations. It should include cell phone use, wearing a seat belt, what to do in case of fatigue and steps to complete in case of an accident. Your efforts will not only protect your drivers, but also others on the road!

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue. Commercial vehicle drivers are responsible for tracking their hours-of-service as part of legislative requirements to reduce fatigued driving and improve safety for all drivers on the road. Electronic logging devices (ELDs) exist to prepare and protect drivers from fatigue through accurate hours of service (HOS) tracking.

An ELD solution places ELDs inside the vehicle and HOS software in the office. This solution eliminates the need for paper logs, improves transportation management and simplifies HOS tracking and reporting.
