Calgary, AB (December 5, 2016) – On November 5, STEP Energy Services Ltd. (STEP) completed a horizontal Duvernay refracture for a long-time valued client; this is the first Duvernay well to be refractured with STEP’s unique diverting agent technology.
“This completion was very technical and showcased both company’s engineering and operational strengths to successfully plan and execute a complicated refracture,” said the client. “While it’s too early to give a definitive number on production increase, the early results are looking very positive,” the client added.

“We continue to listen to our clients and what we hear is that producers need to find economical ways to increase production in existing wellbores,” says Mike Burvill, vice president of fracturing services. “Our diverting agent is distinctive in that we can do extensive testing and provide custom tailored production chemicals specifically designed for each wellbore.”

Since January 2016, STEP’s diverting agents have been successfully pumped in over 20 wells representing 300 diversion stages, and 12 different formations including the Montney, Cardium, and Duvernay.

“Initially our diverting agents were developed primarily for refracturing, however over half of the wells pumped since January 2016 has been new well completions. We are excited about this opportunity to increase fracture complexity and optimize stage count by using STEP’s diverter technology,” says Todd Rainville, vice president of sales and marketing. Rainville adds, “We’ve also seen this product decrease inter-wellbore communication events on multi-well pad completions, preventing potential damage to offset wells.”

STEP’s diverting agents are multi-modal diverting technologies tested in dynamic conditions that combine a number of environmentally friendly, slow degrading solids used as temporary blocking agents. The systems are excellent for fluid loss prevention, bridging, loss circulation prevention, conductivity improvement and fracture fluid diverting. The diverting agents are uniquely customized depending on the desired application, time and temperature. The rate of degradation can be controlled from hours to weeks depending on the product, particulate size and down-hole conditions.
