The Liberal government – with Mark Carney as a key insider – brought in multiple laws hostile to Alberta’s oil and gas industry. That includes “greenwashing” legislation which inhibits companies (in all industries) from discussing their environment goals and record; and a proposed emissions (production) cap on O&G emissions (which new Environment Minister Terry Duguid reaffirmed is still planned by this government under Carney).
But wait … the company that Mark Carney chaired until a few weeks ago – and which recently moved its head office from Toronto to New York – is a major violator of Canada’s greenwashing law.
How so? First, it excludes emissions from one of its subsidiary companies that has major fossil fuel assets. Second, it takes credit for “Avoided Emissions”.
What are avoided emissions? Emissions that could have happened but didn’t. For example, if you decide not to drive to your son’s soccer game this weekend, you have avoided the emissions you would have incurred had you gone. No one recognizes this as a legitimate way to calculate your total emissions.
Brookfield has been nominated for the “Most Egregious Greenwash” award.
Watch here for more detail, including Brookfield’s investments in coal – the highest emitter of all fuels. And Carney’s personal hypocrisy in demanding one action for everyone else, and something quite different for his own company.
During this election campaign, please demand accountability and transparency.
