FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calgary, AB – Today Canada announced its 2023 budget. The Indigenous Resource Network (IRN) has done significant advocacy work in the lead up to this announcement. IRN started with the launch of our Ownership Changes Everything campaign advocating for a National Indigenous Guaranteed Loan program. In January we put more significance on our Ownership campaign demanding that the government implement a National Indigenous Guaranteed Loan program in its 2023 budget. Today as Indigenous communities are trying their best to invest in equity deals with resource projects, there is still no support from the federal government.

“2023 is the year Canada must implement this guaranteed loan program for Indigenous communities, so that we can get projects built, support Indigenous communities with own-source revenue, and provide more opportunities for Indigenous businesses and workers” said John Desjarlais, executive director for the Indigenous Resource Network.

IRN will continue to advocate for a National Indigenous Guaranteed Loan Program so that Indigenous communities can have the access to capital to invest in resource projects. While the government has hinted at exploring “additional federal support to increase access to capital for Indigenous groups to invest in major resource projects” there needs to be more details on how this support will benefit Indigenous communities.
