Canadian Association Of Energy Contractors

“Canadian energy service contractors and the thousands of workers they represent will help lead the global energy transformation, but they need the proper support to continue this essential work in Canada’s energy future,” said Mark Scholz, President and CEO of the Canadian Association of Energy Contractors (CAOEC).

In a white paper released today entitled “Leading Collaboration Through the Energy Transition,” the Association notes that companies and workers within the oil and gas sector also play a leading role in developing Canada’s emerging sectors such as carbon capture, geothermal, LNG, critical minerals, helium, hydrogen, and lithium extraction.

“We are the key to the energy transition as we are on the ground in all sectors, safely developing resources with our technical know-how. But we must ensure that the industry remains healthy. Otherwise, we won’t attract and retain the skills and workers we need to support emerging resource sectors,” Scholz said.

To ensure Canada can meet its climate targets while maintaining a robust resource sector, CAOEC calls on the federal government to support the industry with a refundable tax credit of up to 50 per cent to enable the deployment of carbon abatement technologies in the energy services sector.

“This will allow us to introduce innovative solutions that will reduce emissions from the sector while continuing to create jobs and opportunities for workers across the country,” Scholz added.

Stephen Buffalo, President and CEO of the Indian Resource Council, also expressed support for the paper, emphasizing “the positive impacts the drilling and service rig sector continues to have within [the] Nations.” The sector employs thousands of people across the country and is a significant employer of Indigenous peoples.

Over the past seven decades, CAOEC members have introduced crucial energy technology advancements to push industry goalposts and inspire innovation to become best-in-class. The energy services sector is an eager partner in the global energy evolution and is dedicated to making Canada a leader in advancing carbon abating technologies.

“Our Association’s vision is to create the world’s most carbon-efficient and productive drilling rig and service rig sector,” said Scholz. “We are at the epicentre of Canada’s energy transformation. It is our people that will lead the way forward.”

The white paper builds on government priorities to support Indigenous businesses and communities, incentivize Canadian innovation, retain and create sustainable jobs, and establish Canada’s energy leadership on a world stage. CAOEC looks forward to engaging with the Government of Canada, energy producers, members, industry, and other stakeholders to accelerate Canada’s emissions reduction journey together.
