Galaxy Broadband understands the balance between cybersecurity threats to pipeline systems and Federal Government requirements to protect critical pipeline infrastructure from malicious attackers.
By implementing SMARTSite Managed Services from Galaxy provides an additional level of protection against cybersecurity threats with the ability to segment networks in the design and implementation phase as well as real-time monitoring in the operations phase.
The approach used by Galaxy staff to strengthen the cybersecurity of the network is to divide a network into multiple segments that are also siloed, and air gapped. In addition, maintaining segmentation between the operational network and the information technology network reduces the risk of phishing or malware attacks originating from emails received by employees or contractors working at a remote site. Through the segmentation of networks allows the operator to implement additional security controls and the ability to monitor traffic traversing these segmented networks and makes it easier to detect, prevent, and contain malicious traffic.
Monitoring of these remote networks is made easier by the combination of our OneWeb service that has satellites orbit at altitudes as low as 1,200 km, which reduces latency by almost 90% when transmitting data and a reliability of 99.97% provides real-time monitoring of all devices within the environment. All activity and incident reporting will be provided to a Security Operations Centre (SOC) as it is occurring at the remote site.
SOC staff will be notified of reconnaissance activities as well as an attacker attempting to penetrate the network. With a secure Demilitarized Zones (DMZs) configured by and firewalls provided by Galaxy SMARTSite service can prevent an attacker’s attempts to access the high-value assets by guarding against unauthorized access. By implementing these controls, it makes it more difficult for attackers to be successful because they must gain access through multiple firewall devices.
Rick Hodgkinson, Galaxy Broadband’s president and CEO speaks of cybersecurity where “All Galaxy staff are vigilant against cyber-attacks against Galaxy or one of our customers. With the implementation of segmentation and monitoring of networks we maintain a watchful eye to react and prevent attacks that could negatively impact our customers.”
SMARTSite staff will work closely with SOC staff from the pipeline operations centre to configure policies and access control lists programed on firewalls to prevent cyber attackers from gaining access, stealing corporate data or interrupt operations from the HMI systems or Field Controllers. SMARTSite staff will work to allow only specific devices to connect to high value assets and only specific users to connect remotely to specific services or devices.
In addition, SMARTSite Service also offers a completely integrated communication and network solution where you can connect all your office staff, production worker, IoT (Internet of Things) devices and moral services. Galaxy will manage the bandwidth consumption and maximize Quality of Experience. Quality of Service can also be implemented to prioritize operational traffic to communicate reliability between the corporate offices and remote site.
SmartSite components will include Wi-Fi coverage for computers, tablets, and handhelds. Point to point connections to extend the network with multiple VLans to separate corporate, SCADA and morale traffic. Full PBX Phone services to full service calling through PoE and cordless phones. Integrated internal switching through managed firewalls, access points and switches. Smartsite delivers a high performing completely secure network. True next generation performance, monitoring, and support via OneWeb services.
