Meet the Speakers
Joy Romero | Vice President Technology & Innovation | Canadian Natural Resources Limited
CNRL has been one of the biggest R&D investors in our Canadian industry. What areas of technology are driving investment at CNRL (or in the industry)?
In my 18 years working with CNRL, our research and development has been carried out by operating business units with a focus on a culture that is all about continues improvement and innovation. We work with the business units to clearly articulate what technology gaps there are. In our projects, we focus on increasing productivity and decreasing footprint regardless of whether its conventional, mining, or in situ.
For us, it’s a win-win when we develop technologies that make a difference in our productivity and our footprint. The key is plenty of continuous improvement over they years and so when you add all that together, there has been huge improvements. In heavy oil, we’ve reduced venting volumes by 71% between 2013 to 2017 through a combination of small projects. That reduction equals 17.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent or 3.8 million cars off the road.
