CAPP: The United Conservative Party commits to building a prosperous future for Alberta’s oil and natural gas industry

April 17, 2019 CNW

CALGARY, April 17, 2019 /CNW/ – The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) would like to congratulate Jason Kenney and the United Conservative Party on its victory in the 2019 Alberta election.

CAPP urged Albertans to vote with energy in mind, at the polls. And its Alberta Energy Platform advocated for a government focused on making Alberta one of the most attractive places in the world for oil and natural gas investment. There are many challenges facing the industry and CAPP made action-oriented recommendations focused on market access, regulatory competitiveness, climate policy, and fiscal and economic policy.

During its campaign, the UCP committed to making regulatory, and economic and fiscal policy reforms aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Alberta’s oil and natural gas sector. Among its many commitments, the UCP said it will decrease the corporate tax rate to eight per cent from 12 per cent, develop a robust natural gas strategy, reduce regulatory red tape, increase regulatory efficiencies, and complete a review of the Alberta Energy Regulator within the first 180 days.

The UCP has also pledged to spend up to $30 million to combat misleading news reports about the industry, and to create a ‘war room’ to examine foreign-funded campaigns aimed at discrediting the province’s oil and natural gas sector.

CAPP is encouraged by premier-elect Jason Kenney’s commitment to the oil and natural gas industry and looks forward to working constructively with the UCP to ensure the province meets its energy goals. CAPP will also continue to advocate on behalf of its priority issues such as increasing market access, and reinforcing the economic importance of industry to Alberta. CAPP works will governments of all political stripes across Canada to find a way to attract investment and create jobs through the safe, responsible development of oil and natural gas resources.

The Alberta Energy Platform set goals to ensure the rate of Alberta’s oil and natural gas supply doubles in growth and helps meets global demand, displaces less-responsible sources of supply, doubles investment in Alberta; and, makes Canada the fourth-largest oil producer and third-largest natural gas producer in the world.

CAPP President and CEO, Tim McMillan, will host a brief, 20-minute audio press conference to provide comment on the 2019 Alberta Election.
