Saskatchewan sells last two Crown-own natural gas plants to Calgary-based firm

REGINA — The Saskatchewan NDP is raising concerns after discovering the government has sold two Crown-owned SaskEnergy gas plants to a private Alberta company.

The plants were sold to the Calgary-based Steel Reef Infrastucture for $31.3 million.

They are located in the town of Kisbey and the village of Coleville.

SaskEnergy says the money will be used for future projects.

The NDP says the people of Saskatchewan should have been consulted about the sale.

SaskEnergy critic Nicole Rancourt says the NDP only found out about the deal through an Order in Council.

"It does really concern us and we know that Saskatchewan residents really love their Crown Corporations, they know how important the Crown Corporations are to Saskatchewan in terms of employment and quality of services and they would want to know why these gas plants were sold," she said Thursday.

Dave Burdeniuk, a SaskEnergy spokesman, said the companies were sold to allow the Crown corporation to focus more on the delivery of gas and service, rather than on processing natural gas.

"A decision was made by SaskEnergy to say we want to focus on our core assets."
