Saskatchewan could more than double oil production to as much as one million barrels a day if federal regulations were eased, Premier Scott Moe said.

Canada’s second-largest oil-producing province could exceed its current goal of boosting output about 36 per cent to 600,000 barrels a day if the country scrapped policies such as its cap on oil and gas emissions and regulations on pipeline development, Moe said at a conference in Calgary.

“There’s no doubt that we would be able to hit that 800,000, that million barrels, or double the production,” he said in a question-and-answer session with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

Saskatchewan’s oil production has been in decline since peaking in 2013 at more than 500,000 barrels a day. The province produced about 442,000 barrels a day in January, Canada Energy Regulator data show. Saskatchewan oil production is dwarfed by Alberta, which produces more than four million barrels a day.
