“MPs must prove they are sticking up for their constituents by voting today to cancel the carbon tax hike,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director. “Canadians overwhelmingly oppose the carbon tax hike and now the question is: will their MPs stand with them?”

MPs are expected to vote today on a motion to cancel the April 1 carbon tax increase.

On April 1, the carbon tax will cost 17 cents per litre of gasoline, 21 cents per litre of diesel and 15 cents per cubic metre of natural gas.

The carbon tax will cost the average family up to $911 more than they get back in rebates, according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer.

About seven-in-10 Canadians oppose the carbon tax hike, including large majorities across every province and demographic, according to a Leger poll commissioned by the CTF.

Seven of Canada’s 10 provincial premiers have spoken out against the federal carbon tax hike, as have Conservative, Liberal and New Democrat MLAs across Canada.

“Canadians need relief from the high cost of living,” Terrazzano said. “If MPs truly want to make life more affordable for their constituents, the very least they can do is vote to cancel the carbon tax hike.”
