Abstract:

Two of our prominent politicians have graciously offered up their lunch hours and will be answering your pressing questions.

Question topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • The current state of the Alberta energy industry
  • Diversification of the Albertan economy: stories past & present
  • Updates on the ongoing Inquiry into Alberta oil and gas critics (or “War Room”), and what the deadline extension means
  • Markets for Alberta O&G: is our drive to highlight our ESG portfolio working to attract/retain customers abroad?
  • What the election results south of our border mean for Alberta

….or even non industry questions… Could you identify an aspect of political life that your pre-political life could not have prepared you for? Or Have you been out skiing yet this year?

This promises to pack a great one-two punch.

Please put your questions in the Questions box upon sign-up and let us know who the question is directed at, or if it is for both panelists.  Duplicate question topics will be collapsed into one relevant question beforehand in an effort to keep the flow of the hour and get to all topics of interest. We apologize in advance if we do not get to all the questions!

Speaker Bio:

The Hon. Sonya Savage, LLB, LLM

Sonya Savage is the MLA for Calgary North-West and Alberta’s Energy Minister. Sonya has a Masters of Law in Environment and Energy, with a published thesis on the National Energy Board. She has worked in the pipeline sector for the past 12 years and is currently the Sr. Director of Policy and Regulatory Affairs at the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA), where she handles the large policy files, including regulatory reform, Indigenous reconciliation, legal, environment and climate change. Prior to joining CEPA in 2015, Sonya worked for 9 years at Enbridge where she was responsible for government affairs and public policy. During her time at Enbridge, she worked on numerous pipeline projects, including Northern Gateway, Alberta Clipper and Line 9 pipelines. Prior to Enbridge, Sonya practiced law for 13 years. Sonya has lived in Alberta all her life. She grew up on the family farm east of the city. She’s been an active and well-known member of the conservative movement for over 30 years, since cutting her teeth as the President of the PC Youth in the 1980s.

Greg McLean, Member of Parliament, Calgary Centre

In Parliament, Greg was named on September 8, 2020 as the Shadow Minister for Natural Resources & Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) by new Leader Erin O’Toole. Prior to that, Greg had served as the Deputy Shadow Minister for National Revenue (tax policy issues) under then-Leader Andrew Scheer. Greg was also appointed to the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources; he had previously served on the Justice and Human Rights Committee.

Before being elected in 2019, Greg worked as a financial professional for 20 years, including work with our vital oil and gas sector and with start-ups in technology. Greg’s seen first- hand what it takes to invest, to risk, to build, and to succeed. It’s the entrepreneurial spirit that drives our province and helps make our city great. This financial background is incredibly valuable in Parliament. There are too few politicians who really understand finance, economy and business. Greg also spends some of his time as a new MP helping his colleagues understand oil and gas policy, the significant strides the industry has taken toward sustainable development, and the many reasons that eastern Canadians should prefer western Canadian oil over imports, much of which comes from countries with deplorable environmental and human rights practices.

Greg has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Alberta, and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.

Together with his wife Ruth Pogue, they have a combined family of four sons. Greg is a big music fan, and enjoys skiing, hiking, biking, and everything else Calgary and the Rocky Mountains has to offer.
