At just 9 years old, Oliver Smith heard the words no child should ever hear: “you have cancer.”
He and his family were left in complete shock. “When we heard Oliver’s diagnosis we felt a lot of confusion and disbelief,” says his mom Shauna. “It was very difficult for our family because we had recently lost other family members to cancer. There were a lot of tears during that time.”
This past summer Oliver spent a week at Camp Goodtime, a summer camp which provides children affected by cancer the chance to play, to make new friends and feel like a kid again. “It was important for us to have Oliver experience fun again. For a long time, all he knew was the hospital. For him to be able to go to camp with other kids who were going through treatment or had overcome cancer and experience being a kid again was great,” says Shauna.
