After the 2013 Alberta floods affected their family’s home, credit union member Kim Spence recalls how SPARK The Energy Credit Union stepped up to help in a time of need.

The Spence’s family home was located in the Calgary neighborhood of Sunnyside, just across the Bow River from the SPARK’s head office. While 8 feet of water was seeping into the Spence family’s basement level, SPARK was there to offer them an interest-free loan of thirty thousand dollars for 6 months. With the credit union on their side, the family was able to start their rebuilding journey promptly. Spence remembers the ease of the loan process – quick, simple, and straightforward. SPARK’s support provided some much-needed relief in an otherwise chaotic time.

The Spence family’s home was under the rebuilding process for about one year.  They lived without electricity for the first month.

“It was one of the most challenging and demanding times we had been through as a family – but there were a few memorable moments that we reflect on. One of those moments was the help and understanding received from SPARK,” Kim explains. “We never had to ask them to put themselves in our shoes – they were unquestionably understanding and openly supportive.”

Kim and her husband are now enjoying retirement in Canmore. Their greatest appreciation goes out to SPARK The Energy Credit Union and their swift action to help their members in times that they need it the most.
