CASE STUDY: Provider of Specialized Contractors Drives Safety with Incentives – Hawk Incentives


Incentives alone aren’t the key to an effective safety program. But incentives that the participants actually want can be.

Situation: Cash isn’t always the answer

A provider of contract personnel to the oil and gas industry wanted to improve its safety performance. Some years ago, the company implemented a Safety, Health & Environmental (SHEM) Plan with the primary objective of rewarding employees for exhibiting the proper behaviors to avoid injury.

As the company grew, it became increasingly difficult to select rewards that appealed to its diverse employee audience. The combination of cash and merchandise wasn’t getting the job done. The company’s challenge was to find the right-fitting reward solution to engage and sustain employee involvement in the SHEM program.

“We looked at other incentive solutions, but they didn’t have the depth and quality needed to satisfy the range of our employees’ reward preferences. Most of our employees live in rural areas, and we knew they would appreciate the ability not only to select their own rewards but to conveniently redeem them,” explained the company’s executive vice president.

Solution: Positive and immediate rewards

The company discovered that Hawk Incentives offered a variety of easy-to-use reward cards, and selected a co-branded, reloadable card with virtually universal acceptance. When employees perform desired behaviors, such as attending or presenting at safety meetings, points are loaded onto the personalized employee card at the end of the pay period. Outcome: Participation up, accidents down

“We have seen a significant participation increase in our safety program; participation has more than doubled. The best result has been a significant decline in the incident rate,” explained our client’s vice president of operations.

After a six-month trial with the Hawk Incentives reward card, the company conducted an audit of their SHEM program and learned the card received the highest satisfaction rating. Our client added, “It’s been a very successful program so far. Our employees are focused back on the safety program, and they now have the incentive to keep safety top of mind.”
