PEICE Heavy Oil Recovery Course

Heavy oil production methods are continually changing and improving.  Understaning the various recovery processes which can potentially be used, and how they are applied based on reservoir geological specifics is essential to the optimization of production.

In response to the developents that have taken place in the last few years, PEICE will be offering two new one-day courses.

  • Heavy-Oil Recovery Processes 1:  Cold Production, CHOPS, and Flooding is a one day course providing technical professionals with an overview of current cold heavy-oil production technologies, and introduces new upstream production technologies that have been developed over the last several years. The course focuses on cold primary recovery processes such as Cold Production and CHOPS, plus some aspects of flooding.
  • Heavy-Oil Recovery Processes 2: Thermal (CSS, SAGD), Solvents, and Innovations is a one day course providing technical professionals with an overview of current reservoir production technologies for the recovery of bitumen. The course addresses the range of processes which could be considered including  Steam Injection:  Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS), Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD); Solvent Injection; ElectroMagnetics, Fireflooding ;  Air Injection; In Situ Combustion;  Toe-to-Heel Air Injection (THAI);  and Hybrid & Sequenced Methods.

For both courses, technology screening guidelines will be outlined and informative assessments of the various approaches will be provided.

These courses will be instructed by Patrick Collins, who has over 25 years’ experience in heavy oil, oilsands, SAGD, CSS, CHOPS, and in geomechanics related to drilling and completions, wellbore stability, caprock integrity, minifrac analysis, rock stress analysis, formation overpressures, hydraulic fracturing, and sanding. Patrick is a member of SPE, AAPG, CWLS, CSPG, CHOA, and APEGGA.
