Yesterday, the federal government approved the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. The decision comes at a time when the oil and gas industry has been struggling though the most severe downturn in a generation. The Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors (CAODC) is pleased with the federal government’s decision as the project will ensure oil families can get back to work and Canadians can get full value for their resources. Mark Scholz, President of the CAODC states, “this decision represents leadership on the part of the federal government and a clear recognition of the importance of market access for our industry.”
The Trans Mountain pipeline will ensure responsibly produced Canadian oil has access to broad international markets. “We have an opportunity to share Canadian values with the world. The most environmentally responsible oil should have access to international markets to compete head-on against oil from countries with lower environmental, safety and human rights standards. At a time when 110,000 oil workers are without jobs this federal decision is about real action for our long-term economic success and directly supports oil families,” states Scholz.
However, CAODC was disappointed with the reaction by pipeline opponents in leadership positions shortly after the federal announcement. “It is disappointing to see some leaders in our country advocating for civil disobedience in order to block national pipeline projects. Canadian leaders cannot resort to the same immature tactics as radical pipeline opponents. Leaders like Elizabeth May and Gregor Robertson must put the interests of Canadians ahead of their own personal agendas. More importantly, the federal government must communicate unequivocally they are committed to seeing shovels in the ground in a timely manner and will deal with those who break the law accordingly,” concludes Scholz.
