CALGARY – There’s good news for Calgary businesses this week, as the Government of Canada announced their supercluster initiative for matching funds to jumpstart innovation in high-growth business sectors.

“Superclusters provide opportunity for small and medium sized businesses with innovative ideas and products to access global companies as partners and customers,” said Zoe Addington, Director of Policy, Research & Government Relations with the Calgary Chamber, “Innovation is one of the critical ways that businesses can continue to grow in this new economy.”

Superclusters are an initiative the Calgary Chamber has advocated for at the federal government level and it is positive to see it come to fruition with more detail available today. These Supercluster ecosystems will support Calgary based businesses to find new partners, have access to research and new opportunities for commercialization. A Supercluster in Calgary would mean a significant financial benefit to businesses of all sizes during these weak economic times.

“The Calgary Chamber will be working closely with businesses and partners in our region to support Calgary’s case for the program,” said Addington, “Calgary is a strong contender for several of these superclusters; particularly given our world-class expertise in resource-related and agri-food innovation.”

Superclusters may not be in the most common term in daily business circles; it simply refers to a coordinated and condensed hub of business, not-for-profits, and academia working together on innovative solutions to real-world problems. Particularly important for the Calgary Chamber, these clusters will include opportunities for small and medium businesses to access large customers and markets.
