Using LinkedIn as Part of Your Digital Marketing Strategy – William Joseph

LinkedIn is an excellent digital platform for growing your business network. It should not be your only digital platform but it is important you utilize it wherever possible. Whether recruiting new talent, announcing company news or publishing think pieces, a strong presence on LinkedIn can help build your company’s online profile, raise brand awareness and generate new leads. Perhaps best of all, advertising on LinkedIn won’t consume your entire marketing budget. There are a number of free ways to promote your business on LinkedIn: engage your audience with a status update, share your thoughts by publishing an article, or share relevant content to help position your brand as a thought leader.

The Status Update, or “Network Update” is one of the best ways to stay in front of your target audience, consistently. When used correctly, these little messages can pack a big punch: your update gets broadcast to all of your network connections.  You can also control the visibility of your status update posts before they’re shared, which means you can pick and choose who sees what you’re writing, whether it’s just your connections, everyone on LinkedIn, or even your Twitter and Facebook network. If someone from your network “likes” one of your updates, it will then be shared with their network, and so on. The more likes your post earns, the more exposure you receive. While status updates serve as a great place to share your thoughts, linking to another blog post or interesting website within your status update will provide even more rich insight, helping to establish you and your brand as an authority within your industry.

Remember that LinkedIn is a professional network, so it’s best to make your posts business-related; and leave the cat pictures for Facebook. Using the platform to share relevant content related to your industry is also an effective way to raise your brand awareness. Use the @ in mentions if you’re posting about an individual or company, so your post can link to their LinkedIn page. While consistency is key, it’s also important to remember that LinkedIn is not Twitter, so posting 20 times a day will likely come off as obnoxious or annoying. Also remember to share your thoughts when your network is most active online. This can be problematic if your network is in different time zones, so use your best judgement.

Another powerful way to share content on LinkedIn is through the publishing platform. With 345 million members on LinkedIn, publishing serves as a great opportunity to expand your reach. Given that many of your network connections are like-minded professionals, there will likely be interest in the material you choose to publish. This type of shared interest creates the perfect opportunity for a two-way dialogue between you and those who view your content, helping to grow your following. One thing to keep in mind is that published think pieces on LinkedIn should not be overly promotional. LinkedIn is the place to strategically position yourself and your brand, leverage your network, increase brand awareness and ultimately convert leads to sales.
