Energy Industry Stampede Breakfast Hits a Home Run

Despite continued low oil prices and tempered optimism, the 19th annual Big Guns Stampede Breakfast, which is held this year on July 11th from 7 AM till 1 AM. is SOLD OUT.  Darryl Fushtey, the organizer and planner for the event, reports that this year, oil & gas companies as well as service companies from around Western Canada will come together at the Cowboys Casino Legendary Stampede tent.  Over 5,000 tickets have been sold to this year’s event.   “It’s an indication from all those attending that networking and meeting new prospects is as important as ever, says Darryl.  “It’s the largest event of its kind where producers and services companies are under the same roof, or in this case, tent. This year’s event has grown from 14 sponsors in 2016 to 28 sponsors.  It’s great that so many sponsors  have come on board to not only support the industry, but support local charities as well. I can tell you, the minute this year’s event is over we will be planning for 2018 and already have even more ideas in the works.”

Event History

19 years ago, Big Guns owners came up with the idea to showcase their company and other companies during the Calgary Stampede. It started off with 6 companies its first year, hosting its first event in a parking lot across from Chevron’s head office on 4th Ave and 5 street. Over the years, the event continued to grow  from a few hundred to a few thousand. In 2016, Darryl Fushtey asked Big Guns owner Duncan McPhedran if he could run and organize the event with the goal keeping the event’s spirit, tradition, and the core values, which are: building relationships, meeting new people, and getting oil and gas producers with the service companies.

In 2016, after careful consideration, Darryl decided to take the event from the downtown core to a new venue. After looking for the ideal location, the legendary Cowboys tent that is located beside the Cowboys Casino was the chosen location for its size and what it can offer to larger scale crowds. The Cowboys tent holds 5,000 people compared to the downtown location which only held up to 2,000 people at any given time. The Cowboys tent can withstand all weather, from rain, wind, and protect people and give them shade from the sun. This location was also chosen for its ability to scale the event up to 10,000 people. A complimentary shuttle bus service will be running from the downtown area to the Cowboys tent from 7am to 1pm. Darryl has a strong relationship with the SAIT Student Petroleum Society, as he believes this event is the perfect venue for bringing people in the industry and students together. Building these relationships and people coming together is key to success for all involved. So it was no surprise when Darryl asked SAIT to join this year’s event. After discussions to see how SAIT and their engineering students could be a part of this event, it was decided to make this event a fund raiser. 50 students will be attending this event to sell raffle tickets to raise money for Calgary Food Bank and for the SAIT Student Petroleum Society to help the future of SAIT students and families that would benefit from the event. The students will sell raffle tickets for Cowboys concerts that are held at the tent and also sell tickets for the 2 dunk tanks that will be on site. Throughout this year’s event, guests also have a chance to win a number of prizes including over $10,000 in giveaway concert tickets that are held at the Cowboys Legendary Tent.

Last year was the first time Ceili’s Pub was invited to attend this event raising proceeds for the Calgary Food Bank which was a huge success. This year the event will have 2 dunk tanks competing against one another to see who can raise more money for the charities that we are supporting. The Ceili’s Pub has a history of supporting local charities and fund raising events which made them an easy pick for organizers to work with. Ceili girls volunteer their time to help raise money and awareness for struggling families.
